Breast Procedures

These procedures are designed to lift, rebuild, or enlarge the patient's breasts.

To choose a Plastic Surgeon,  ask your family doctor for advice or consult with friends and acquaintances. When a name comes up several times and always with good references is usually a good sign. Remember that each case is unique and that your friend’s good results do not guarantee yours.

Breast augmentation surgery, although one of the most frequent and rewarding interventions, presents a set of consequences to be taken into account that should not be neglected by those who choose this option.

  • Breast prostheses are not definitive
  • Must be changed or withdrawn after 10 to 15 years
  • The state of the protheses and the breast tissue should be monitored periodically through Ultrasound Mammography or even MRI

Complications:

  • Capsular contracture, which is the result of a fibrous tissue that involves and deforms the protheses
  • Prosthesis rupture
  • Giant cell lymphoma-T-cell lymphoma subtype that can emerge 1 in every 500,000 cases with textured prosthesis (seldomly used nowadays)- most of these cases can be treated with the removal of the prosthesis and total capsulotomy.

Nowadays it’s becoming more and more frequent cases of women who after 10 to 15 years with protheses decide for their removal and (in cases in which is possible) to perform Mastopexy (breast reduction).

Prosthesis augmentation mammoplasty is currently witnessing an unusual expansion of desire and increased possibilities for altering anatomical morphologies deviated from current beauty standards.

Objectives:
Breast augmentation is one of the most sought-after interventions to correct the insufficient volume of the breasts through a prosthesis that replaces the gland tissue.

Before the intervention:

  •  There is no ideal prosthesis yet. Prostheses are a foreign body and the correlation with a rare form of lymphoma is discussed.
  • The prostheses should be changed between 10 and 15 years.
  • The most common complication is capsular contact.
  • The size and shape of the prosthesis, the location of the scar, the subfascial or retro-muscular placement or the dual technique should be discussed in advance, meeting the patient’s wishes by talking realistically about all these aspects.
  • Emphasis should be given not to take aspirin or any other medicines that interfere with coagulation 10 days before the intervention.

Results:

Anesthesia:
Classical general anesthesia or sedation completed with local anesthesia, depending on patient profile.

Duration:

Normal surgical time is about 60 to 90 minutes.

Mastopexy is the plastic surgery mammoplasty procedure for raising sagging breasts upon the chest of the woman; by changing and modifying the size, contour, and elevation of the breasts.

Results:

Reduction mammoplasty (also breast reduction and reduction mammaplasty) is the plastic surgery procedure for reducing the size of large breasts. In a breast reduction surgery for re-establishing a functional bust that is proportionate to the woman’s body, the critical corrective consideration is the tissue viability of the nipple-areola complex (NAC), to ensure the functional sensitivity and lactational capability of the breasts.

The indications for breast reduction surgery are three-fold — physical, aesthetic, and psychological — the restoration of the bust, of the woman’s self-image, and of her mental health.
